Unapologetic Nº9

The work practices the visual and dynamic articulation of the Palimpsestic Image with concepts from Psychology and Psychiatry. This is due to research into cognitive dysfunctions, childhood traumas, and both psychodynamic and behavioural-dialectical theories. These themes are reflected through an autobiographical archive (analogue photography and automatic writing) of which the solo exhibition "Unapologetic" from 2023 was an example.

Key concepts such as suicide, memory, overcoming, free will, frustration, penis envy, already studied by various thinkers, are applied in the work, constructing a therapeutic interpretation of biographical facts. The dreamlike space of the painting resembles intellectualised "raw art", but naive elements are inserted into it. The cameraless gum bichromate technique (photography that combines chromium salts with the use of binding materials and pigments) was invented in the 19th century and is explored by the artist Resende as an imagistic form in the pictorial field. The photographic technique, automatic writing and painting triangulate in a palimpsestic practice that is typical of the cognitive processes of memory. In this way, psychological phenomena and the pictorial and photographic construction are interwoven in a mutual reflection. Thus, the anachronism of the technique is used in the work to reflect themes that cut across the human condition.
